What a day for nerds! We finally have heard the official cast of the new Star Wars Episode VII film!
“Director J.J. Abrams says, ‘We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.’
I’m going to be honest. I was not happy about the last go around of Star Wars flicks. I know its not trendy anymore to dislike the prequels, but I can’t help it. I never enjoyed them, even though I was a prime candidate for being the biggest Star Wars Episode 1: Phantom Menace fanboy ever. There was something lifeless about it, even at 10 years old I knew I couldn’t feel emotion for the characters like I did for the original three. I know this sentiment has been beaten in to the ground a thousand, if not a million times before me. But what excites me today is some of the casting choices that inspire confidence in a fresh group of filmmakers that want to do right by the story, and not by the fans.
Actors are key to a good Star Wars flick. It has been said before and I’ll say it again, some of the casting decisions for the prequels were horrible. Hayden Christensen from bumbling jedi to the Dark Sith Lord known as Darth Vader? I call BS man. I could kick that guy’s ass with or without force powers. He was always complaining about shit. I wish Luke could have build a time machine, traveled back to before he was even born and kill his father then. Yeah it would cause some space time issues, but at least we wouldn’t have to see “Annie” Skywalker have mommy and girlfriend issues for two movies.
Adam Driver as a key villain has unlimited potential. If you have ever seen his dark side on the HBO show “Girls” you know that he can be relatable and a horrible person in the same scene. This was the best casting news, although he had been rumored for awhile. The unknowns are great. I think that adds an extra element we all want to see in these movies. Plus the original cast being thrown in there…I hope they don’t have large roles, their stories are done. Han and the Princess’ love story is one for the ages, but let it be. The only curveball in the announcements was Andy Serkis…in an unspecified role. One can assume he will be in some sort of motion capture machine for a majority of the movie. Poor guy, for as good as his acting skills are, nobody wants to see his actual face.
To sum it all up a friend, who shall not be named, just today found out they are making new Star Wars films. His response? “BUT WHY?!?”
My response? “Because the prequels sucked dick and I want some more jedi on sith action.” And its as simple as that. If you can make me care about the emotional weight of each lightsaber duel…that’s all Star Wars is about. Forget the “force” or the tiny beings swimming around in our blood. Give me some old school, bad ass sword fights, with stakes behind each one. Then I’ll be a happy camper.
